Editor’s Note: Today’s post is from the archives. In a season of hustle and bustle, working mom Kate shares how a few words of kindness were truly the best holiday gift:
A few days ago I was having a really bad day. One of those days I’ve heard virtually every mom describe having at one point or another. The kind of day where it seems like absolutely nothing is going right and according to plan and that leaves you feeling like you’re failing.
That same day, I came home to a message from one of my aunts. We’d seen her over the weekend and she was calling to tell me how great it was to see our family and what a wonderful mom she thinks I am to Liam. It was a simple thing, but that day it was exactly what I needed to hear. My eyes filled with tears and my whole outlook on the day changed.
Yesterday, I sent a note to a close friend who’s going through a lot right now – she’s a mom, she works full-time, she’s living through a whole house renovation (I remember what living through a renovation with a child was like) and she’s in the middle of a difficult second pregnancy. I think she’s a superhero for handling everything she’s got going on right now and told her so in my note. She called me later and we both ended up crying as she told me how hard it’s been lately to try to balance everything, especially over the holidays, and how much it meant to get that note.
This time of year is crazy for everyone, no matter your situation. I know no one wants to add anything additional to your to-do list but if you can spare a few moments, try to think of someone in your life who could use a few kind words and send them their way. From my experience, it’s a greater holiday gift than anything you could buy them.
